Innovative Solutions
for Translational Research is a half-day forum featuring
the most innovative and successful solutions to promoting
translational research and commercialization.
Lesa Mitchell, Kauffman Foundation Vice President
for Advancing Innovation, will moderate
the Entrepreneurial Philanthropy to Advance Innovation
session.
Lesa Mitchell is responsible
for leading the Kauffman Foundation’s initiatives
to advance innovations. She has been responsible for
the Foundation’s frontier work in understanding
the policy levers that influence the advancement of
innovation from universities into the commercial market.
Prior to joining Kauffman, Mitchell’s professional
background included consulting for global pharmaceutical
clients such as Takeda and Eli Lilly. She spent 20 years
of her career in global executive roles at Aventis and
Quintiles. She has a bachelor’s degree from the
University of Kansas and volunteers time on various
regional boards.
Baiju Shah, BioEnterprise President & CEO,
will speak on the External Single and Multi-University
Models panel. The Kansas Bioscience
Authority has engaged BioEnterprise, Cleveland
's bioscience business development organization, to
advise on the development of the organization's business
model. Shah has been meeting with Kansas executives
and board members since May 2005.
Baiju Shah and BioEnterprise provides management advice,
business development and access to capital to privately
held medical device, biopharmaceutical and health care
services ventures. The BioEnterprise Initiative has
helped create, recruit, or accelerate more than 45 companies
that have collectively attracted more than $200 million
in new funding. Prior to BioEnterprise, Shah was with
McKinsey & Company, where he played a leading role
in the Growth and Business Building practice and helped
develop two new service lines: developing corporate
new venture units and monetizing intellectual property.
Shah received a J.D. from Harvard Law School and his
B.A. from Yale University.

Jim Millis, Cargill Technical
Director of Industrial Bioproducts and KansasBio Board
Member, will speak during the Biorenewables: Sustainable
Growth Opportunities for the Chemical Industry session
at BIO 2006 in Chicago.
Jim Millis is the Technical Director
for the Industrial Bioproducts business of Cargill.
He has worked in several technical and management roles
at Novozymes, Bio-Technical Resources and Codexis. Millis
is a sought-after speaker, and in January, he spoke
at the international BIO industrial biomass meeting
in Hawaii. He received a B.S. from Cornell and a M.S.
from the University of Pittsburg, both in chemical engineering.

Dr. Scott Kohl, ICM Lab Manager,
will speak during the Bioethanol: From Fueling Cars
to Driving the Biorefining Revolution breakout session
at BIO 2006 in Chicago.
ICM was founded in 1995 in Colwich,
Kan., with the vision of making ethanol a viable, readily
available, domestic alternative to imported petroleum,
ICM continually adds to our array of services, striving
to improve our already excellent yields and efficiencies.
Dr. Scott Kohl grew up on a farm in rural South Dakota
and went on to receive his doctorate in Chemistry at
South Dakota State University. With his strong farming
upbringing, contributing to the success of the agricultural
economy is never far from his mind. In addition to his
work at ICM, Dr. Kohl writes a column for Ethanol Today
magazine.

Dr. John Siebert, Chairman & CEO and KansasBio Board

Dr. Siebert has focused CyDex on the development of
products using CyDex’s innovative, enabling, drug
delivery technology. He has reorganized and redirected
the company and completed a Series B financing. Prior
to joining CyDex, Dr. Siebert was President and Chief
Executive Officer of CIMA LABS. Prior to joining CIMA
LABS, Dr. Siebert had served in scientific, quality
assurance and product development roles with G. D. Searle,
E.R.Squibb, Bayer and Dey Laboratories, as well as Procter
& Gamble. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree
in Chemistry from Illinois Benedictine College, a Master
of Science in Organic Chemistry from Wichita State University,
and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University
of Missouri.
VasoGenix Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Jeffrey L. Southard, Co-Founder, Vice President Drug
Development

Mr. Southard has spent his entire 20 year R&D career
in the pharmaceutical industry in positions that encompass
all aspects of the pharmaceutical drug development process
from product discovery to market approval. Mr. Southard
has authored numerous publications and holds several
patents related to medical device and drug formulation
development. Prior to finding and licensing the technology
that would ultimately launch VasoGenix, Mr. Southard
held positions at Aventis, Pharmaceutical Research Associates,
PPD Pharmaco, Telectronics Rhythm Management Systems
and Atrix Laboratories (QLT USA). He received his B.S.
Degree in Biology from Colorado State University and
trained as a U.S. Army Medic specializing in flight,
ER and trauma medicine.
