all over the industry - everything
from being chosen as the U.S. headquarters
for an international company to encouraging
our research university expansion,
and we are also nurturing our growing
companies, with capital and other
necessary resources. Kansas is making
a BIG difference.
Below are some of the stories I'm
sure you are following as we continue
to "think BIG in the biosciences."

Focus:
Rural Development, Bioscience & Biofuels
Governor
Sebelius spoke at the groundbreaking
for the state's largest ethanol plant, Conestoga
Energy 110 million gallon ethanol production
facility near Liberal on August 3, 2006.
"Kansas has a growing
biofuels industry and we've made great strides
recently to move up in the ethanol production
rankings. We have several ethanol plants
in construction right now and by January
we'll have doubled our state's ethanol production
in just the last four years." Governor
Sebelius said, "renewable fuels also
have the potential to create jobs in rural
Kansas. We can see that at the ethanol plant
in Liberal, which will have a $2 million
annual payroll and employ roughly 50 people."
Congressman Jerry Moran
hosted the U.S. Department of Agriculture
(USDA) Under Secretary for Rural Development,
Thomas C. Dorr, in Kansas last week to visit
USDA Rural Development projects throughout
the state.
Congressman Moran said Kansas' First District
is one of the most rural districts in the
country, and it was important to have Under
Secretary Dorr spend time viewing the success
of Kansans in utilizing the programs his
department administers. Discussions focused
on rural and community development, as well
as the potential bio-energy projects have
in adding economic value to Kansas. Kansas
Bioscience Authority Chairman Clay Blair
attended the event in Holcomb, one of the
stops on the rural development tour.
