KansasBio Accomplishments: Get The Word Out!
 

Serving as the voice of the bioscience community in Kansas, KansasBio’s long list of accomplishments within the last two years prove that we are making significant strides in telling the Kansas Bioscience Story and getting the word out across the state.

Operate as the principal state-wide conduit to bring the bioscience community together into a collective and collaborative group.

1. We have added 65 members, nearly tripling the size of the organization in two years growing from 33 members to nearly 100!

2. By reaching out across the state, we have established and maintain a network of more than 2200 bioscience industry stakeholders in Kansas.

3. Partnerships are key to building collaboration. Numerous bioscience industry partnerships count on the support of KansasBio. Listed here are many partnerships we serve:

Provide a forum in which members can convene and interact to exchange information and ideas.

1. Opened quarterly board meetings to all members

2. Added networking reception following each meeting

3. Established BIG THINKER speaker series and awards

4. Formed Workforce Development and Intellectual Communications Task Force groups

5. Rotated meeting across the state. Board meetings were held in Topeka, Lawrence, Wichita, Manhattan, KCK, Overland Park, and Pittsburg. Industry forums were presented at the Kansas Day of Innovation 2006 and Agriculture Biotechnology forum at the Kansas State Fair 2006

Guide public policy on bioscience in the state and address issues in a timely fashion.

1. Conducted policy survey among members 2006, 2007

2. Established legislative agenda 2007

3. Attended legislative fly-in D.C. 2006, 2007

4. Held Plant Made Pharmaceutical Forum 2006 with KARA and Dept of Ag)

5. Held Bioscience Policy Forum 2006 with Network Kansas

6. Worked with BIO to establish advocacy with Kansas legislature and KARA

7. Conducted a Legislative Bus Tour in 2007 with Kansas Chamber, KARA, and KTEC

8. Worked with KARA and the legislature to form the Bioscience and Technology Caucus

Offer intellectual, networking, and commercial opportunities for its members.

1. Organized BIO 2006 Chicago with KBA, KTEC, Hill’s, Bayer, ICM and 18 other partners

2. Organized BIO 2007 Boston with KBA, KTEC, Hill’s, Bayer, ICM and 22 other partners

3. Added partnership program for members to provide services to KansasBio members

4. Supported scholarship programs for members’ undergraduate and graduate student forums: 2006 (3 scholarships), 2007 (15 scholarships)

5. Established industry tours for university and community member groups: 2006 (1 tour), 2007 (3 tours)

Serve as an educational and information resource to advance public understanding of bioscience.

1. Attended 29 regional community outreach meetings to present information about the bioscience industry

2. Published Kansas Bioscience Magazine 2006 (2 issues), 2007 (2500 distribution)

3. Distributed magazines and other materials at national HR conference, job fairs, Kansas State Fair 2006, 2007

4. Worked with K-State to publish Ag Bioscience White Paper 2007; distributed to legislature and community groups

5. Distributed eNews highlighting breaking news, successes, awards, and other relevant information to the bioscience community in Kansas

6. Published Kansas Bioscience and Innovation Roadmap and summary document 2005

7. Shared December 2003 bioscience industry report with partners and other requesting organizations

8. Obtained updated industry data for an industry report in 2007 with KTEC and KBA

9. Kansas has successfully broadened the conversation about biosciences to include the full range of animal, human, plant and industrial biosciences, including cancer therapeutics, bioengineering and medical devices, polymers and composite materials, and biofuels. We realize that our future success lies in playing to our strengths in these key areas where we have critical mass within the industry. This is an important discussion relative to our expansion and growth. We have a plan and we are discussing and deploying it.
