BIG ROI...ALREADY?
Post-BIO Report by KansasBio President
Following our return from BIO 2006 in Chicago, and we have shifted focus toward ROI from this statewide investment of time and resources. Kansas is well aware of an important bioscience lesson...we must be patient, persistent and strategic in our aim to become a leader in the biosciences. As we prepared for BIO 2006 in Chicago, we didn’t know exactly what opportunities we would uncover, nor what opportunities might find us.
We spent time discussing our strategy and studying how to begin a dialogue that might not yield effects for years to come, but we were ready, willing and able to deliver the best possible message for the great state of Kansas. After all, we have a BIG story to tell. The Kansas Bioscience Authority is ready and open for business. The Kansas Department of Commerce and partners all across the state are ready to invest. The Legislature is passing more bills that encourage growth and investment in this important industry. Private industry is responding by joining forces and striking collaborative deals. The Authority is making investments now. And while we aren’t ready to spend the $580 million today, we are ready to encourage deal-flow so our state can make the best possible investments – today.
Something amazing happened in Chicago. Our delegation was bursting with pride. We had reason to be proud. We pulled together a huge delegation, an attention-grabbing pavilion and a well-organized message about our billion dollar bioscience story. The buzz was palpable.
The result has been an unexpected immediate ROI. We know we must be patient, but it's hard not to brag on what immediate payback we have all earned.
This is simply beyond industry expectations for a “first year” pavilion presence. Here’s the BIO/ROI scorecard so far:
- Seven (7) Kansas bioscience company leaders said they got deals going worth more than $12 million.
- Three (3) business development leaders said they have active prospects as a direct result worth an estimated $600 million annually (I’m not kidding).
- Two (2) communities have prospects engaged with greater than $100 million in potential annual revenue and more than 100 new Kansas jobs.
- Two (2) deals got done resulting in at least $5 million in projected revenue for Kansas.
Grand Total to Date: $717 million – That’s BIG deal-flow!

BIG "TAILGATE" PARTY
Kansas "Tailgate" Biggest Party in Exhibit Hall
|
The Kansas "Tailgate" was the "biggest" party in Exhibit Hall on Tuesday, April 11! The Pavilion was transformed into a "game-day" atmosphere complete with music, pom pons, flags, pennants and banners from Kansas universities. "Fans" enjoyed hot dogs, popcorn and jumbo pretzels. The "Tailgate" featured former KU All-American and NFL great Gale Sayers, courtesy of the Kansas Bioscience Authority, and Voice of the Kansas City Chiefs Mitch Holthus. The Kansas "Tailgate" Party, sponsored by Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP and Haake Insurance, was an opportunity for all statewide partners and Delegates to showcase the Kansas Bioscience Initiative. The first 500 "tailgaters" received KansasBio basketballs (the "biggest" giveaway at the convention) with the saying, "A Kansan invented basketball for free. Just think what we can do with $580 million!" |
