Save the Date for BIO 2008

It’s time to Save the Date for BIO 2008! Plan to join Kansas in San Diego for the 2008 BIO International Convention, June 17 - 20, 2008, at the San Diego Convention Center.

The “Olympics of Bioscience” is where the biotechnology industry comes together for the fullest and thought-evoking education program and innovative networking opportunities for all levels of biotechnology professionals. KansasBio and Agri-Business Council of Wichita Presents the bio nxt Conference

KansasBio has partnered with the
Agri-Business Council of Wichita to host the bio nxt conference, December 12 and 13 at the Wichita Airport Hilton.

You are invited to attend the conference and explore new opportunities in the growing industry of agri-business. Topics will include:

Biofuels – Opportunities in ethanol, biodiesel and other renewable fuels.

Bioindustrial products – Kansas’ assets in bio-renewable plastics, polymers and advanced materials which complement our strengths in nanotechnology.

Human health – Developments involving agriculture in the healthcare industry.

Animal health – as a leading state in the animal health sub-sector, many companies are serving this niche and leading where the market is headed.

S. 1145: Patent Reform Act of 2007

It is very possible that the Senate will consider S. 1145, the Patent Reform Act of 2007, within the next month.

Because this bill, as currently drafted, threatens biotechnological innovation, now is the time to contact your U.S. Senators and let them know that this bill must be opposed in its current form.

KansasBio Partners with Polsinelli on Educational, Networking Program

Polsinelli Shalton Flanigan Suelthaus PC in affiliation with KansasBio will host its initial "BioLoguesbreakfast program on Tuesday, November 6, 2007. This is an educational and networking outreach program for key players in the region's life science community.

Ron Brakke of Brakke Consulting will kick off the quarterly series, discussing the track to market for animal health products and how the developers of human health products may be able to take advantage of this alternative track to market to support their human health development efforts. AdvaMed 2007 Exceeds Attendance Expectations
KansasBio sponsors and is represented

With initial projections of 750 attendees, AdvaMed 2007, the inaugural MedTech conference, exceeded expectations by bringing together more than 1,100 attendees from 35 states and 25 countries. Building off of this strong first-year showing, AdvaMed announced the 2008 international MedTech conference and exhibition, AdvaMed 2008, will be held September 21-24 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C. Members At-a-Glance:

The Kansas Bioscience Authority recently approved investments that will provide support of the state’s growing bio sector. Recipients of the investments included KansasBio member companies:

Lawrence-based CritiTech will receive a tax investment incentive of more than $260,000 to support the company’s FDA investigational new drug application for Nanotax, which targets ovarian and pancreatic cancer. The company has attracted significant private and federal investment, as well as support from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and is expected to expand its workforce by 25 to 30 employees.

OsteoGeneX, Lawrence will receive a $130,000 research and development voucher to collaborate with the University of Kansas on medical trials for a groundbreaking treatment to stop the advance of osteoporosis and related bone disorders.

Lenexa-based Innovia Medical will receive a $650,000 equity investment to help bring its FDA-approved product, EarCheck, to market so physicians, parents, and others have access to new technology that helps rapidly detect ear infections in young children.

KC BioMediX of De Soto will receive $150,000 to commercialize technologies developed at the University of Kansas for the care of infants born prematurely. The company’s device treats preemies who have difficulty feeding orally so they can quickly gain strength and grow.

Committee Call for Involvement

KansasBio standing committees meet monthly and welcome participation from new members. Our committees will expand this year to include working groups on specific projects. The committees are: Executive Committee, Public Policy and Education Committee, Events and Programs Committee, and Membership and Benefits Committee. Assignments are announced at the annual meeting November 15, and will include both board members and members at large. If you are interested in serving on a committee, please send a note to info@kansasbio.org and we’ll forward it to the correct committee so you can become involved!!
